Midwest ice storms

Hey all,

So I weathered the "ice storm" easily and well. It was a bit of a let down,
frankly, after all the "sky is falling" talk at the office yesterday.

At about 1:45am the transformer near my house "blew" - well, I don't know if
it blew up, but it certainly arced loudly and displayed an intense blue
light. Extra blankets kept me plenty warm while I slept, but this morning I
was loathe to get out of bed as the thermostat read 57 degrees (fahrenheit,
that is.)

A phone call this afternoon confirmed that either 1) the electricity has
been restored, or 2) unexpected alien guests dropped by and are running
things with their enormous intergalactic brains.

So, can anyone tell me what transformers are doing when they arc blue and
then quit working?

I suspect that it's not a fuse blowing, but I really don't know. Though I
did a little rudimentary googling, my workplace frowns on non-work related
surfing so I'm a bit inhibited.

B.
